Matt's TransAtlantic Christmas Special Extraordinaire!

Greetings to our fellow readers! As promised, I am now showcasing my favorite Christmas specials! I do have a few movies on the list, but everything else is a special. And as an added bonus, I have included the best the Brits have to offer in terms of holiday goodness. Having lived there for 3 years, I have grown quite accustomed to their specials and they will have a special place in my heart. Without any delay and without any further adieu, I bring you (in no particular order) my favorite Christmas Specials.

1) A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas (2001)

A lot can be said about this episode. It brings to light the parody of every special ever made. It also includes a mini-special itself with "KISS Saves Santa" (which I would really like to see Seth McFarlane make into an episode). It also shows Stewie's toil with having to be a good boy in order to receive his beloved plutonium.

2) American Dad!: The Best Christmas Story Never Told & The Most Adequate Christmas Ever (2007, 2006)

Good ol' Stan Smith and his Christmas shenanigans. Nothing makes me smile more than the "Heaven Gun" and that Jane Fonda ruined Christmas.

3) Blackadder Christmas Carol (1989)

This is a British favorite of mine. We see a reversal of "A Christmas Carol" done here. Rowan Atkinson plays a shopkeeper who is descended from the other Blackadders. On Christmas Eve, A ghost visits him to show how nice he is compared to his ancestors and that his life is more rewarding. Comedy ensues more when the ghost completes Blackadder's vision.

4) Mr. Bean: Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean (1991)

Who did not love Mr. Bean while growing up? Always a victim of his own traps and then ingeniously through fault or circumstance comes out unscathed. Well, it's Christmas and Mr. Bean is getting everything ready for his Christmas dinner with his lady friend. A definite watch for sure!

5) Doctor Who (Various)

The Doctor Who Christmas Special is a staple in Britain. Not every Christmas special is about or revolve around Christmas. It is simply aired on Christmas Day, hence it is technically a Christmas special. However, I find them quite enjoyable (as well as other Doctor Who episodes). A good mix of sci-fi, Christmas, and fun.

6) A Christmas Carol (1999)

Now, this has been done more times than Jenna Jameson. However, I do find Patrick Stewart's version to be the best. An excellent depiction of the novella with an actual British Scrooge.

7) A Christmas Story (1983)

Another movie on my list, but TBS does play it for 24 hours starting on Christmas Eve every year, so it is sort of a special. I don't think I really need to elaborate on why this is an awesome Christmas treat.

8) Vicar of Dibley (Various)

British comedic genius Dawn French plays a vicar in the fictional town of Dibley. Having to deal with the local parishioners and the local council to many of the church's goings-on. You can see this show on PBS if you feel so inclined.

9) Little Britain Abroad (2006)

Another British Gem. This one has really nothing to do with Christmas other than it was aired as a "Christmas Special". The two-part episode shows many of the characters travelling to various countries where hilarity ensues.

10) Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)

You can't really call this a full length movie considering it is only an hour long, but it is by far my most favorite of the Rankin/Bass stop motion movies. Definitely fun and entertaining. Also, a little cruel considering in the beginning Santa sounded like he wanted to take Rudolph to the slaughterhouse.

11) A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

Charles Schultz's classic Peanuts alum, Charlie Brown frets over the over-commercialization and growing secularism of Christmas. He finds the true meaning of Christmas and all is right with the world.

12) It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

Some might laud that this is the best Christmas movie ever. And it does live up to its merits. Down on his luck, George Bailey contemplates suicide, gets a visit from his guardian angel, Clarence. He sees what it was like not to be born, sees people are affected by his presence for the better, and it is a Merry Christmas to all.

13) National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

And now some might laud this as the best Christmas movie. It has the comedic approach to the family gathering holidays and trying to deal with it the best you can.

14) The Simpsons: The Simpsons Roasting Over and Open Fire (1989)

If I started the list with a cartoon I hold so dear, I might as well as end with one that shares my affections as well. The Simpsons has had many Christmas specials, but this was the first. Homer attempting to scrounge up enough cash for the holidays by playing a mall Santa. He gets talked into betting everything on a dog race. The dog loses, but in turn, the family gets a new member of the family by adopting Santa's Little Helper.

Honorable Mentions:
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966), Alvin & The Chipmunks Christmas Special (1981), A Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), and a Muppet Family Christmas (1987), Robot Chicken Christmas Specials (Various), and South Park Christmas Specials (Various.

Well, I hoped you all enjoyed the list. Pour a nice warm glass of hot chocolate, grab a blanket, and watch some holiday classics.

Matt's Top 10 Christmas Videos/Songs

I figured it is close to the holidays and I figured I would post my all-time favorite holiday videos/songs. Some songs obviously have way too many artists so I picked one. Others on the other hand I enjoy. I hope they bring you some holiday cheer and make sure the speakers are pushed up to 11 and enjoy.

BTW, this list is in no particular order:

The Pogues with Kristy McColl--Fairytale of New York

While the vulgarity of the song is blatant and subtle, it does have a very charming melodic tune.

Wizzard- I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

I picked up this gem while I was stationed in England. Definitely the best of the Glam Rock Christmas Era.

Wham!--Last Christmas

Say what you will, but every year people break up around Christmas. This song gives the perfect blend of heartache and Christmas cheer.

The Darkness--Christmas Time

This is what it would be like if Def Leppard made a Christmas Album.

Dr. Elmo--Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer

As a child you loved and laughed at it. Now as an adult you laugh at the blatant massacre of a family member and how your kids are laughing at it.

Dr. Seuss/Thurl Ravenscroft--You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch

Now, who did not enjoy this song?

Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews--Baby It's Cold Outside

Ah, nothing like pleading with a woman on a winter's night to stay at your home. In hopes you could get her drunk enough to have sex with you.

Josh Groban-- O Holy Night

I know the list has been pretty secular to this point, but I can not help but thoroughly enjoy this song.

Garth Brooks--Belleau Wood

This song touches on the Christmas Truce of 1914. Though, the song is a little inaccurate, it still gives me goosebumps. PS, I will write a blog about this in the near future.

Nat King Cole--The Christmas Song

I know it has Natalie Cole in it, but I could not find a video of just Nat's voice. And to me that is the only version I really want to listen to.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the list. Feel free to add some of your own. Please check back this month as I plan on showing you some more of my holiday cheer. Oh, and for anyone who is Jewish, I did not forget you. So here you go:

"Something, Something, Something Dark Side" trailer...

Here's the trailer for the upcoming "Family Guy" spoof of The Empire Strikes Back, "Something, Something, Something Dark Side":

"Clearly Clearly DOPE", according to Keown...

...And I concur! These images come from Empire Magazine, if Google translated the Russian right. I'd love to have a copy of this issue!

BTW, if your not clear on which of their movies they're portraying, you're not a true movie fan and should be ashamed of yourselves.

Chris' Quote of the Day

actual exchange between my 10-year-old sister and I last night...

CHRIS: *sighing* Ahh, fuck a duck...
BROOKLYNN: Why would you fuck a duck when you could fuck a human?
CHRIS: Because the feeling that prompted that sigh warrants a duck-fucking.

This is It...

What? Did you think I was talking about that flop of a movie about MJ? I'm talking about a BIGGER hit than that! "The Pearl & I", the SERIES-FREAKING-FINALE!!

Chris' 10 favorite music videos...

This one just missed the cut...

The byline says it all. In no particular order, because they're all fucking amazing.

I will tell you right now, that there is no greater music video in the history of ever that tops "Thriller". Fuck anyone who says any different.

Aside from "Thriller", the next video is probably my favorite of all-time...

The next one might come as a surprise, since most every one of you know of my loathing of U2...

Now, be prepared for two Metallica videos. They must be great if I have both in my top ten, eh?

Why do I have this song in my iTunes library? So I can dance if I want to. Yes, I went there...

The next video keeps me up at night much more effectively than any horror film I've ever seen...

One of my filmmaking goals is to do a music video for my friend Russell's band using this as the blueprint/inspiration. You'll notice the passing resemblance that MCA has to Detective Alvarez from Short Game...

Christopher Walken dances. You have just been pwned...

I still can't really figure out how they could've accomplished making this back in the '80s...
